What live-in care actually looks like

A Live-in Care Assistant moves into a Client's home for a placement and becomes part of their daily life.

It's often the next step for experienced Care Assistants ready for deeper, one-to-one relationships and real career development. You get to know their routine, their preferences, what makes them laugh, what puts them at ease. They stay in the home they love, with dignity and independence intact, and their family has the peace of mind of knowing they're in good hands.

Your placement has a clear rhythm:

  1. Your placement: typically 2 to 4 weeks

You live in your Client's home and support them throughout each day. You have your own private room, and evenings are usually quieter.

  2. Your handover

At the end of your placement, another carer takes over. You brief them fully on your Client's routine and wellbeing.

  3. Your break: typically 1 to 2 weeks off

You go home. No visits, no rota, no obligations, so you come back ready to give your best.

What a placement includes

You support your Client according to their Care & Support Plan. It can include:

  • Personal care: washing, dressing and grooming
  • Medication reminders and administration
  • Preparing meals and supporting nutrition
  • Light housekeeping: laundry, tidying, household tasks
  • Accompanying Clients to appointments and outings
  • Companionship: conversation, activities, being present
  • Keeping accurate daily care records

You are not on call through the night. Clients are matched to carers based on their needs. Where overnight support is required, that is agreed and compensated separately; it is never assumed.

Training and support from day one

Live-in care has its own challenges, and our training reflects that. You will feel prepared and confident before your first placement, not thrown in at the deep end.

Once you are ready, you head into your first placement with a dedicated buddy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I expected to be awake through the night?

No. Live-in care is not the same as a waking night shift. Most Clients have minimal overnight needs. Where overnight support is required, this is discussed openly before the placement begins and compensated separately. You are entitled to a minimum of two hours of uninterrupted rest during the day, and a full night's sleep is expected.

What's the minimum commitment, and how long is each placement?

To join as a Live-in Carer, you'll need to be available for at least a month at a time, or for a long-term placement. Within that, individual stays with a Client typically run 2 to 4 weeks, with 1 to 2 weeks off in between before your next placement.

Will I have my own private space?

Yes. You will always have your own private bedroom in the Client's home. Your off-duty time in the evenings is your own. We match carers carefully to Clients to ensure the household situation is comfortable for both parties.

Do I need live-in care experience to apply?

Yes. Experience as a live-in carer is essential for this role, along with an enhanced DBS check and two satisfactory references from previous employers. If your experience is in another part of care and you're interested in moving into live-in work, call our team and we can talk through the best next step for you.

Do I need an NVQ or QCF qualification?

An NVQ/QCF Level 2 or 3 is highly regarded and can support your progression, but it isn't essential if you already have live-in care experience.

What if the placement isn't working out?

We work hard to match carers and Clients carefully before a placement begins. But if things aren't right, you talk to us and we sort it. You are never expected to remain in a situation that isn't working. Our coordinators are always available to step in, support, or arrange a change.

What is the pay, and how is it structured?

Live-in Care Assistants earn £854.70 per week, plus holiday pay and a pension contribution. A £45/week meal allowance is also provided during your placement. Accommodation is covered, which means your weekly earnings are effectively your spending money.

Do I need a car?

A driving licence is helpful and preferred for some placements, particularly for Clients who need accompanying to appointments. However, it is not essential for all roles. We'll discuss your situation during the initial conversation and match you to placements that suit.

What support will I have during a placement?

A named care manager checks in with you regularly throughout your placement. The office team is always reachable by phone. Before your first placement, you'll shadow an experienced Live-in Carer so you know exactly what to expect. You are never placed and left to figure it out alone.

I must live locally: what does that mean exactly?

We ask that you live within a reasonable distance of Stevenage, Bishop's Stortford, or Braintree. This ensures you can attend training, handovers, and team meetings when you're on your break between placements. If you're unsure whether your location qualifies, just get in touch and we'll be happy to discuss it with you.
