What the Care Assistant role actually looks like

A Care Assistant is the person who helps a Client manage everyday life at home.

You provide practical help, personal care, company and reassurance, while encouraging them to do as much as they can for themselves. Over time, you become a familiar person who knows their routines, notices when something changes and helps them feel comfortable and supported.

A typical day:

  1. Start with your planned rota

You know which Clients you are seeing and when.

  2. Short travel between local Clients

We aim to keep Clients close to you, with many journeys around 10–15 minutes.

  3. Client Care & Support in their home

This is the main part of the job. You spend time with the Client, helping with what they need that day and supporting them according to their Care & Support Plan.

  4. Keep the team informed

You update care records and report anything important you notice.

What happens during a visit

You support one Client at a time, helping with what they need that day according to their Care & Support Plan. It can include:

  • Washing, dressing and personal care
  • Medication support
  • Preparing meals and helping around the home
  • Shopping and appointments
  • Company, conversation and reassurance
  • Supporting confidence and independence
  • Noticing changes in a Client's wellbeing
  • Keeping accurate care records
